Pressure increasing within the sector
- New FM standard must be implemented
- Congress trade fair provides impetus through practical experience, research and teaching
Düsseldorf/Copenhagen, 12. December 2011– The European Facility Management Conference (EFMC) will present its expanded concept from 23 to 25 May 2012 in Copenhagen, in order to even better represent the increased requirements in the sector. Therefore, this event presented under the motto «Global responsibility – local acting» will be more interactive, larger and even more practice-oriented (efmc-conference.com).
There is hardly any other branch in the service sector that is currently experiencing such a varied and troubled business environment as facility management (FM): ecological, construction, technical, economic and human factors must be coordinated in an international environment. Companies must decide whether all, or only certain, FM services should be delivered by their own employees or from external specialists, while service providers must offer corresponding tailor-made professional solutions. In the process, the pressure increases on the supplier side. The management consulting company Dr. Wieselhuber & Partner (W&P) views the «market position of larger family-run companies in the FM sector as seriously threatened», after their turnover among the list of the top 25 FM service providers was only around half as high as affiliated group companies in the same list, whose market share will more than double by 2020. In the opinion of W&P, growth is mainly possible through an extension of a company’s service portfolio, and according to a study by the German Facility Management Association (GEFMA), this could increasingly be achieved in the area of property management and commercial services. In any event, global orientation is as equally in demand as local service provision because FM customers have established their company locations in a diverse range of countries across the world for many years.
«Despite the different perspectives around the world and various national cultures, facility managers all face similar challenges – from demographic change through to energy management and organisational development,» says Wayne Tantrum, present chairman of the European association EuroFM. EuroFM is a traditional organiser of EFMC, together with the International Facility Management Association (IFMA). «The guiding principle ‘Global responsibility – local acting’ plays an important role here in pointing out added value in the area of facility management,» according to Tantrum. The local host of EFMC 2012 is Dansk Facilities Management Netværk (DFM), while other cooperation partners include the Centre for Facilities Management (CFM) from the Technical University of Denmark, the Danish Industry Association (DI) and the Danish Purchasing and Logistics Forum (DILF), as well as the Danish Association of Construction Clients (DACC). More than 50 speakers from Europe and abroad will be speaking at EFMC on a range of topics, including corporate social responsibility, sustainability and triple bottom line, energy and environmental management, building management, FM organisation, workplace concepts, information and communications technology, and risk and crisis management in FM. Another topic is the European standard for FM, which was completed in October 2011 and must be integrated into national standards by April 2012.
EFMC 2012 combines both practicalaspects and scientific approaches to FM in the Business Conference and the Research Symposium, while the Round Tables and Speakers’ Corners promote the area of networking. The new concept increases the quality and international scope of the congress trade fair, where numerous exhibitors will also be presenting their services. A variety of specialist excursions will be offered during the day on 23 May, before the organiser invites guests to a welcoming reception at Copenhagen Town Hall during the evening. The conference and trade exhibition on 24 and 25 May will be held in the Bella Center, one of the most modern trade fair and congress centres in Europe. On the evening of 24 May, the FM awards will be presented in multiple categories as part of a gala dinner held at the Danish National Museum. The large specialist and supporting programmes at EFMC offers visitors the opportunity to increase their knowledge, exchange experiences and enjoy social events over the three days, as well as the chance to get to know what is regarded as a particularly advanced Nordic FM concept in a Scandinavian country.
