Smart cities, or intelligent cities, are the result of the increasingly urgent need to orient our lives towards sustainability. These cities utilize infrastructure, innovation, and technology to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
What do these sustainability measures entail?
Utilizing photovoltaic panels in communities, more electric transport and vehicles, wind turbines on streetlights, solar panels for traffic lights or signs, promotion and development of bicycle use… Smart Cities employ a variety of resources, and all these small actions lead a city to become more efficient and sustainable.
Which are the world’s smartest cities?
There are different parameters by which one city is valued more than another. For this, 10 key dimensions are considered: Governance, urban planning, public management, technology, environment, international projection, social cohesion, mobility and transport, human capital, and economy.
What is the ranking of the top 5?
- Tokyo:
It is the best-ranked city in 2013, holding the first position in human capital and public management. However, in social cohesion, it has fallen significantly, especially due to the Fukushima earthquake and the subsequent tsunami.
- London:
It maintains high levels across almost all dimensions, particularly excelling in international projection and technology. However, it has relatively low values in public management and social cohesion.
- New York:
It is the most populated city in the United States and the second-largest urban agglomeration on the continent after Mexico City. It is one of the most important cities globally in terms of human capital and economy.
